Who’s There?
Times have changed. I can remember, as a young boy,
going to my friend’s house, knocking, and then walking in before anyone answered
the door. It was very common with some friends, but not with all. Today, many
people have peep holes in the door so they can look through and see who is there
before they answer. From my living room I can see my driveway, so I can usually
tell who is coming to my door even before they knock.
Even if I don’t know who is there, I will rush to
the door as soon as I hear the door bell. Most people I know will answer the
door no matter who is knocking.
We sometimes approach our spiritual lives in the
same manner. No matter who is knocking at the door of our hearts or thoughts,
we are quick to answer. Maybe we need to take more time and find out who or
what is knocking.
If God is knocking we need to answer and find out
what He wants, and then follow His directions. Too many of us still answer the
door even if we think Satan is knocking. If you feel it is Satan knocking, just
turn to Jesus and say, “Jesus, could you please get that for me?”

Love
Love is a strange emotion, one that seems to have
its own set of strange rules. I know I love my wife, but why? I know that my
love for her is not founded solely on what she does for me. Even after a
‘disagreement’, my love for her remains. Whether she is near or far away, my
love for her continues to strengthen itself. What I do know is that no matter
how long it has been since I saw her last, no matter what we last said to each
other, no matter what she has done or hasn’t done, when I look into her eyes, my
heart leaps and my love for her cannot be contained.
Oh, that I could have that same love for God. Too
many of us love God for what He does for us. We get mad at Him for something
that was not His fault and we push Him aside. We wander away from Him and
really feel no need to rush back to His side.
I
want to be able to look into the eyes of God and have my heart and soul melt,
for no other reason that I love Him; to be able to gaze upon Him and see nothing
of the world; to love Him with an unimaginable love.

Two Hands
Have you ever tried to take a walk while holding the
hands of two children. It almost comes with a written guarantee that they will
want to travel in two directions: one wants the slide, the other wants the
swing; one wants the path on the right, the other the path on the left. The
only way to have a peaceful walk is to let go of one hand and be led by the
other.
Jesus warns us in Matthew 6:24, “No man can serve
two masters.”(KJV) It is impossible for us to truly serve God and still keep
one foot in the world. Doing so is like trying to walk with two children. God
and our love for Him will pull us in one direction while the world pulls us in
the other. This will never lead to a peaceful, fulfilled life.
Anything that the world has to offer us may seem
attractive at the time, but it is only temporary. All that it has to offer will
tarnish and turn to dust. Everything that God has to offer is eternal. Over
time, it will become more precious. Each of us need to make a decision. Do we
want to try and let God pull on one hand while the world pulls on the other, or
do we let go of the world and let God lead us into eternity?

Filled
The other day I took my car to the gas station to
fill it with gas and I did something that I always do, but it was something that
spoke to me about my life. I held the nozzle until it clicked off letting me
know that the tank was full. But then I waited a few seconds and I squeezed the
nozzle again to get a bit more gas in the tank. If the price is low, or I’m
going on a long trip I might go through this procedure a number of times to make
sure I get as much as possible into the tank.
In Ephesians 5:18, we are admonished to be “be
filled with the Spirit.” (KJV) One meaning of this word fill is to cram in
every last bit possible. That is what God wants for us and also what we should
want for ourselves. Our desire should be to get every possible ounce of the
Spirit of God crammed into our being. He should be pushed into us until there
is no more room, and then pushed a bit more.
We should be like a suitcase ready for a long trip.
You know the kind, when you have to sit on it to get it closed. That’s how
filled we need to be with the Spirit of God.
