Guard Your Heart
Marshall McLuhan once said, “Art is anything you can get away with.” If you take some time to watch TV, go to movies or listen to music, it will not take long to realize that this is the idea on which much of the entertainment industry works. If you compare what was seen and heard 25 years ago, it is much different compared to today. It seems that today there are no limits to what is allowed and considered ‘art’.
In Psalms 101:3, King David says, “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.”(KJV) The Hebrew word for wicked is also translated as without profit, evil or naughty. This stands as very good advice for today, but we should also expand it to allow nothing wicked to enter our ears also.
We have allowed the line of acceptability to slide over the years. Just because more people allow a certain behaviour does make it more acceptable. We need to protect our hearts and minds from things we know to be wrong. Proverbs 4:23 warns us to “Keep vigilant watch over your heart.” (The Message) What goes into our eyes and ears affects our heart. To guard our heart means that we need to be careful concerning what we watch and hear.
